The technical parameters of activated carbon

Vina TS2024-08-13T16:15:56+07:00

Each line of activated carbon products will have different technical parameters and different applications. In this article, we will help you understand more about the indicators of activated carbon, thereby helping readers understand the common technical parameters.

7 Common activated carbon indicators

STT Indicator

1 Iodine

2 Density

3 Moisture

4 pH

5 Size Mesh

6 Methylene Blue

7. ASH activated carbon (Ash)

  1. Iodine activated carbon

The iodine index is the most important index, characterizing the pore surface area and adsorption capacity of the coal. The iodine index is calculated by the mass of iodine that can be adsorbed by a unit mass of coal (mg/g), indicating the adsorption of a single layer of iodine molecules on the surface of the coal.

2. Density of activated carbon

Density or Bulk Density is the bulk capacity of activated carbon. Expresses the mass of coal per cubic meter (m3). Unit of measurement is usually mg/cm3 or kg/m3

3. Moisture of activated carbon

Moisture index shows the moisture content of activated carbon or the concentration of water in the carbon.

4. Size Mesh of activated carbon

Size mesh is an index showing the size of activated carbon particles, often used for granular activated carbon

5. pH

pH is an index that determines the chemical properties of water. The pH scale is from 0-14; pH = 7 is neutral. PH>7 is alkaline, pH < 7 is acidic.

Activated carbon usually has a pH index of 9-11, so it is alkaline. It is often used to balance the pH in acidic liquids.

6. Methylene Blue

Methylene Blue index (Methylene Blue dye) is an index showing the adsorption capacity of activated carbon. The higher the adsorption capacity of Methylene Blue, the stronger the adsorption capacity.

7. ASH activated carbon (Ash)

ASH is an index of ash content or ash content of activated carbon. Ash reduces the effectiveness of activated carbon. You will find low ash content in all our activated carbon products (<3%)

Water can be used to dissolve or wash away the ash, thereby reducing the ASH index. Normally, activated carbon used in the food industry will use acid to remove the ash content dissolved in water. Then the acid will be removed to “neutralize” so that the activated carbon has the best quality.

Above, Vina TS has introduced to you the 6 most common indexes when reading the technical specifications of activated carbon. Hope we have brought you useful information.
