What is activated carbon? Benefits and uses in beauty
- What is activated carbon?
“What is activated carbon?”. Accordingly, activated carbon is organic charcoal produced from materials such as wood, bamboo, coconut shells, rice husks… These are all natural materials. These materials are processed under high temperatures in an anaerobic environment, thereby creating a porous and porous structure like a sponge to increase the absorption contact area.
The main mechanism of action of activated carbon is to absorb chemicals, dirt, filter water, and filter air, so this active ingredient brings many uses in life as well as health and beauty.
- Uses of activated carbon
Emergency poisoning treatment: Activated carbon has been used as an emergency anti-poisoning treatment since the early 1800s. This effect is based on its ability to adsorb and bind to drug molecules, reducing their effects when poisoned or overdosed. Activated carbon can be used to treat overdoses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as Acetaminophen, Aspirin, sedatives… Scientific studies show that taking 50 – 100g of activated charcoal within 5 minutes after taking an overdose of a drug can reduce the drug’s effectiveness by up to 74%. Activated charcoal is thought to be most beneficial when used within the first hour after poisoning or drug overdose. Additionally, activated charcoal is not effective in all cases of poisoning. For example, it is less effective in cases of alcohol poisoning and heavy metal poisoning (iron, lithium, potassium, alkali). The use of activated carbon in the treatment of poisoning should be as prescribed by a doctor or medical staff;
Promotes kidney function: Activated charcoal helps promote kidney function by reducing the amount of waste that the kidneys must filter. This is especially beneficial in people with chronic kidney disease. Activated carbon can bind with urea and other toxins, helping the body eliminate them (Urea and other wastes pass from the blood into the intestines through diffusion. In the intestines, they bind with activated carbon and is excreted in feces);
Reduce symptoms of fish odor syndrome: Activated charcoal can help reduce unpleasant odors in people with Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) – also known as fish odor syndrome. TMAU is a genetic condition caused by the accumulation of the compound Trimethylaminuria – a compound that smells like rotten fish – in the body. In normal people, the body converts TMA into an odorless compound before excreting it in the urine. However, patients with TMAU lack the enzyme necessary to carry out this conversion process. This causes TMA to accumulate and be excreted in urine, sweat, and breath, causing a fishy odor. Scientific studies show that the porous surface of activated carbon can bind to small odorous compounds such as TMA and help excrete them from the body;
Reduce blood cholesterol levels: Scientific studies show that activated charcoal has the ability to bind to cholesterol and bile acids containing cholesterol in the intestines, preventing them from being absorbed. In one specific study, taking 24g of activated charcoal every day for 4 weeks reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol by 25% and helped increase HDL cholesterol.
Good for the digestive system: Activated charcoal, when taken orally, will help absorb waste products that are harmful to the body as well as absorb excess in the stomach. This helps reduce bloating and indigestion quickly;
Water filtration: Water is an important resource for humans and organisms in the living environment. Therefore, clean water, not contaminated with alum, limestone or dirt, is an essential requirement to protect health. With the ability to adsorb toxins, activated carbon is currently used in most water filtration products to provide clean, quality sources;
Treating mold: Mold easily grows in damp places. Breathing air containing mold will negatively affect your health. Therefore, activated carbon has been applied to completely remove mold and help keep the air fresher.
- Activated carbon used in beauty
Beauty activated carbon is applied in external care products such as masks, toothpaste, shower gel, facial cleanser…
Toothpaste: Toothpaste contains activated carbon to help easily remove bacteria, plaque, and pests, making teeth brighter and whiter;
Mask: Mask containing activated carbon helps remove dirt deep in pores, shrinks pores and brings bright white skin;
Anti-skin aging: Skin aging is a natural process of the body and the aging rate increases with age. Studies have shown that using activated charcoal properly helps reduce the aging process from within, preventing cell damage to the liver and kidneys. Take 1-2 activated carbon tablets after meals every day or after exposure to toxins in the environment to help eliminate toxins, protect the body, and prevent aging…
